Today the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights passed a resolution to investigate human rights violations in Iran. While we recognize this unprecedented moment in the 43-year-long fight for human rights in Iran, the scope, specificity, and pace of this resolution are insufficient vis-a-vis Iran's escalating human rights crisis.
The passed resolution addressed only one of the three demands in this petition and other calls for decisive actions from the U.N. More importantly, the situation in Iran has changed considerably since the early stages of the uprising months ago. Now, the protests have evolved into a revolution, and the regime facing the fast-approaching probability of its inevitable demise no longer fears the consequences of committing atrocities. More importantly, while it may take months, if not years, before any meaningful action results from this resolution, the regime has hastened the execution of innocent civilians in its courts and on the streets. In terms of the scope, this resolution fails to recognize the current reality in Iran, where an overwhelming majority demand a regime change, and simply punishing the regime is no longer sufficient. It seems that the international community is drastically lagging in addressing the crisis in Iran with sufficiently appropriate and measured responses. The language and premise of this resolution fail to recognize that a revolution is shaping up fast with the single and united goal of a complete and absolute regime change. As such, it is time for the international community to take impactful actions in rejecting the current regime's legitimacy by: banning and expelling its agents and diplomats, closing down embassies in Iran, and putting a hard stop on any negotiations and talks with the outlawed regime. The organizer of this petition is working on a draft of a letter to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights voicing these concerns.
As the current resolution lacks the appropriate specificity, scope, and urgency, we must continue to voice the demand of the people of Iran risking their lives to free their country from an outlawed dictatorship that continues to kill, torture, and rape unarmed civilians.
