Thank you to the now 900+ people who have signed and stood with me in calling for the protection of our native vegetation and wildlife.
Here’s the latest:
• Minister for Environment Responds
I received a formal response from the Office of the Hon Steve Dimopoulos MP, Minister for Environment. The Minister’s office clearly states that the responsibility for protecting native roadside vegetation and wildlife lies with local government - our shire.
•Ringtail Possum Deaths on/near Truemans Road
Despite this, recent roadside clearing on Truemans Road for a planned roundabout has resulted in ringtail possum deaths. Dense vegetation was removed without the use of wildlife spotters, displacing and ultimately killing vulnerable possums who rely on continuous canopy for survival.
•Council Denial Despite Formal Complaint
In response to my formal complaint, the shire advised that “all protocols under the planning permit were complied with.” This completely ignores council’s obligation to uphold broader environmental and wildlife protection laws - including the Wildlife Act 1975 and Planning and Environment Act 1987. Planning compliance does not excuse harm to native wildlife.
• Letter to Mayor and Councillors – Still No Response
I also wrote directly to the Mayor and councillors asking for action. I’ve received no response.
This is not acceptable. Our community cares deeply about our wildlife and native habitat - and this petition is growing because we know what’s being lost, and how avoidable it is.
Please continue to share, speak up, and demand better from those responsible. The lives of these animals depend on it.
With heartfelt thanks,
Nat
