Emergency Contraception Pill Vending Machine on Temple Campus

The Issue

It's now been over one year since Roe v. Wade was overturned; over a year since bodily autonomy was ripped away from millions; over a year since the government decided that unborn fetuses were more important than the physical and mental health of the person carrying that fetus. As states across America began banning abortions, many began to question the legality of emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) like Plan B.

Let's be clear: ECP is not an abortifacient, as it prevents ovulation so that sperm and egg never meet. Some states and companies have restricted access to ECP by raising prices, locking product up in cases, and/or requiring a physician's note. This disproportionately affects people of color, lower-income individuals, and individuals living in conservative areas.

Installing an ECP vending machine on Temple University's campus will allow students, faculty, and community members to safely and anonymously obtain emergency contraceptives FOR FREE without feeling shame or judgment from store employees, customers, and/or physicians.

People will be able to access this vending machine
24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is crucial to obtain emergency
contraception within 72 hours after unprotected sex, thus improving the
effectiveness.

There is a national movement for ECP vending machines on college campuses. Let our campus be the next to join the 3 other universities in Pennsylvania and 40+ universities nationwide that have an ECP vending machine. Let our campus be a leader in this movement.
