Embrace Gender Expression and Identity in Schools

The Issue

I am standing here today, on a journey of self-exploration and understanding of my gender identity, to appeal for acceptance and understanding. I believe it is time to bring about changes that will build inclusivity within our schools and enable everyone to feel safe and respected for who they truly are.

Transgender and bigender students should be allowed to use the restrooms that best correlate with their inner sense of gender. The trepidation and anxiety that stem from the thought of being judged in such a basic human necessity is distressing.

Further, as well as anyone identifying within the LGBTQ+ spectrum, they should be given the freedom to express themselves through clothing choices. A uniform should not stand as a constraint to their identity.

According to a 2019 study by the Journal of Adolescent Health, transgender and gender-diverse youth are significantly more likely to develop mental health conditions and are at a higher risk for self-harm and suicide due to the social stigma and discrimination they face (Chodzen et al., 2019).

Stereotypes are not only damaging, but they also undermine the individual's validity and their freedom of expression. By breaking these stereotypes within our learning institutions, we provide a platform for expanded understanding and acceptance of diversity.

Together, let's create a world where gender does not confine us, but where we all have the right to express our uniqueness freely without fear of judgment or discrimination. Please, sign this petition and advocate for change that breeds acceptance and eliminates ridicule and bias treatment of every individual based on their gender identity or sexual orientation.
