Elon University has successfully attracted two locally-owned coffee shops to the campus vicinity. Shortly after opening, each place became an intellectual hub for students, faculty, and staff. The managers of each are not just business operators; they are members of the Elon community. Placing a new Starbucks directly next to one of these coffee shops not only changes the tone of downtown Elon, it reflects poorly on Elon University as a community partner. We urge the university administration to reconsider the decision to allow a Starbucks to be placed in downtown Elon.
