The Issue

Misleading, False and Illegal Caviar Marketing

The world is awash in caviar that is marketed in a misleading, false and often illegal manner. Caviar is frequently marketed as being from a Sturgeon species that is not clearly communicated and being from a country that it is not from with an expiration date that is impossible to determine.

In Europe, Dedicated Sturgeon Farmers are Threatened

European sturgeon farmers have invested millions of €s to breed high quality sturgeon from one of 28 beloved species like Beluga, Osetra and Sevruga. These investments provide 1000's of jobs for suppliers, farmers, distributors and restaurants. Misleading, false and illegal marketing practices undermine this cornerstone of European fine dining traditions.

European Caviar Consumers Are Being Conned

Rampant misleading and false advertising leads to consumers paying €3000+ per kilo for caviar that is from a species or country that is purposefully mis-labeled. Sometimes the tins contain a decent product, but usually the product is poor quality. and if it has been imported from long distances - it is often old and close to or past optimum consume by dates. This practice threatens the long and beloved tradition of European fine dining and should be stopped.

Three Simple Steps to Eliminate Misleading, False and Illegal Marketing

  1. Require that sturgeon species be clearly printed on the lid of the caviar tin
  2. Require that the country of origin be clearly printed on the lid of the caviar tin
  3. Require that the date of harvest (not the date of repackaging) be clearly printed on the CITES code on non-reusable labels applied to tins of caviar

Summary - Protect European Fine Dining Traditions

Maybe the world has bigger problems to solve than caviar fraud? BUT if you think of it in terms of suppliers, farmers, distributors, restaurants and consumers - In a world seemingly gone mad, we should protect the grand tradition of European fine dining and eliminate Caviar deception.
