Eliminate homework in Atlanta schools

Eliminate homework in Atlanta schools
The Issue
Growing up in Atlanta, I have been a student overwhelmed by the continuous burden of homework. I believe it eats away at precious time that could be spent with family, exploring passions, and engaging in community activities. Like many others in the Atlanta area, I feel that homework is an outdated educational practice that fails to contribute effectively to student learning. It not only drains children of the time they need to rest and play but also piles unnecessary stress onto their daily lives.
Numerous studies have shown that excessive homework can lead to not only burnout and stress but also a negative attitude towards learning itself. In our fast-paced society, kids need time to grow holistically - mentally, socially, and physically - and homework often hinders this natural development. In fact, according to research from Stanford University, more than 56% of students considered homework to be a primary stressor.
We’ve also seen countries like Finland thrive educationally without excessive homework, focusing instead on school-day learning and practical experiences. By adopting similar strategies, Atlanta can become a trailblazer in progressive education, enhancing both the well-being and academic performance of its students.
Let's promote a change where schools concentrate on fostering a love for learning rather than an obligation to complete assignments after hours. We call upon the Atlanta Public Schools system to initiate this transformation and consider evidence-based approaches to substitute homework with more interactive, real-world learning and family time.
Please join me in advocating for the elimination of homework in schools throughout Atlanta to create a more balanced, effective, and joyful educational environment for our children and future generations. Sign this petition to make our voices heard and drive the change that Atlanta's students truly deserve.
