The American Intern Movement is fighting to increase the accessibility of internships.
The Issue
No one should have their opportunities for personal and professional growth curtailed by economic or social instabilities. The American Intern Movement (AIM) is working to advocate for standard workplace rights, deserved by all employees, including, but not limited to, compensation for benefits garnered to employers, demonstrate that interns are an essential component for the proper functioning of our public and private organizations, organize to ensure that minority communities, whom have historically been excluded from the labor market, are not disadvantaged from gaining experience in an internship role, and ensure that Americans receive an educational and valuable internship experience by participating in professional development training and workshops.
We are a grassroots movement of young adults advocating for a more equitable standard of internships. Aspiring professionals across America have been excluded from the internship experience based solely on socioeconomic factors. In particular, we recognize the role of systemic racism in disadvantaging nonwhite communities for generations. No individual should have to choose between supporting their careers or supporting their subsistence. AIM fights to ensure that interns across America have the opportunity to acquire, maintain, and enjoy an internship to advance their professional careers. We work to catalyze the message that interns deserve to be compensated for their work. Whether it be through a base pay, a travel stipend, housing accommodations, or catered meals, we envision a society in which aspiring politicians, doctors, engineers, etc are free from all socioeconomic limitations associated with obtaining an internship. The educational experience garnered from a well-structured internship program is invaluable, and, therefore, guaranteeing the accessibility of these programs through compensation for all individuals is imperative. We stand in solidarity with the millions of individuals who yearn to achieve the American dream as we work to revolutionize the American internship landscape.
Join us on Novemeber 20th, 2019 at Freedom Plaza from 9am-11pm as we walkout to advocate for greater internship accessibility!
