City Council, Reject the Newman 6 Fracked-Gas Plant

The Issue

El Paso’s Green New Deal is under attack by JP Morgan Chase. El Paso Electric, now owned by JP Morgan, is attempting to build a new monstrous, 228 MW Fracked-Gas Plant in El Paso: “Newman 6.”

But, City Council has the power to stop this: Mayor Dee Margo, Peter Svarzbein (D1), Alexsandra Annello (D2), Cassandra Hernandez (D3), Sam Morgan (D4), Isabel Salcido (D5), Claudia Lizette Rodriguez (D6), Henry Rivera (D7), Cissy Lizarraga (D8).

If built, Newman 6 will lock-in El Paso’s use of dirty fracked-gas energy for the next 20 years. This is an attack on the climate and our local Green New Deal Future. In the 10th sunniest city in the world, El Paso Electric only uses 3% renewable energy.

JP Morgan Chase Bank is the largest financier of the climate crisis. El Paso is part of their plan to prop up the Permian Basin--the world’s largest producing oil and gas shale. Their first step was to buy out El Paso Electric Co. and make it a private equity firm--a corrupt process of financial exploitation that destroyed public control over our electricity. Sunrise and the El Paso community fought hard against this corporate takeout. El Paso City Council ignored us.

JP Morgan already invests in many fracking companies in the West Texas Permian Basin. The Permian is a massive portion of global methane (a GHG 86x more powerful that CO2). Just a few hours from El Paso, there is a climate bomb ready to explode. Now, JP Morgan plans to connect the Permian Basin Climate Methane Bomb to the proposed Newman 6 Fracked Gas Plant via the El Paso Pipeline.

El Paso City Council must stand up for our city, people, and climate and REJECT Newman 6--or else we will replace them with community members who will.
