Educate to Empower: Promote Civic and Political Education for All!
The Issue
Inspired by the story of a 20-year-old woman, who, in this information age, was unaware of the role of COMELEC (Commission on Elections) in the Philippines, this petition aims to shed light on the dire need for effective political education in our schools. The stark reality is that she is not alone. Many young Filipinos are woefully undereducated about the underpinnings of our democratic system and the role and mechanisms of our governing bodies. With youth aged 15-30 years comprising nearly 32% of the entire population in the Philippines, according to the 2015 National Youth Assessment Study by the National Youth Commission, this inadequacy in our educational system can no longer be overlooked.
Political ignorance allows corruption to flourish, weakens our democracy and disenfranchises the young, making it harder for them to actively participate in decisions that impact their lives and futures. In addition, enhancing political education will empower future voters, equipping them to better understand political platforms and promises, placing them in a better position to discern truths from falsehoods.
We call on the Department of Education to integrate a comprehensive political education program into the national curriculum. Our youth deserve a system that affords them a deeper understanding of political processes and their roles as future leaders. By signing this petition, you are advocating for political literacy as an indispensable quality that the young ought to possess – a weapon against ignorance and a tool for progression. Let’s sign now.
