Edmonton Oilers Reverse The Signing of Alex Formenton
The Issue
To: Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club and OEG Inc.
On September 9, 2026, the Edmonton Oilers signed Alex Formenton to a one-year contract. This decision has deeply hurt many survivors, longtime fans, and community members who expect the organization to represent integrity, accountability, and respect.
We acknowledge clearly and without qualification that Alex Formenton was acquitted in court in 2025. This petition does not challenge that verdict, nor does it declare him guilty.
A criminal trial determines whether the Crown proved criminal charges beyond a reasonable doubt. It does not require fans, survivors, sponsors, or community members to support every employment and roster decision made afterward.
Following the acquittals, the NHL itself stated that the conduct at issue “falls woefully short” of the standards and values expected of NHL players and clubs, and determined that formal league discipline was warranted.
The Oilers have now chosen to make Formenton a representative of the team and our city. For many of us, that decision conflicts with the values we expect from an organization with enormous influence over children, families, young athletes, and the wider community.
As a sexual assault survivor and longtime Oilers supporter known as Mama Stanley, I cannot support or cheer for this team while Formenton remains an Oiler. Since sharing that decision, I have heard from survivors and hockey fans across Edmonton, Canada, and beyond who feel hurt, unheard, and betrayed.
This is not about abandoning the other players we have loved and supported. It is about holding the organization responsible for a decision it willingly made.
Our central request is simple:
We call upon the Edmonton Oilers and OEG Inc. to take every lawful and contractually available step to reverse this signing and end Alex Formenton’s affiliation with the team.
We also ask the organization to explain publicly how this decision was made and to adopt clear, survivor-informed standards for future signings.
By signing this petition, you are not declaring anyone criminally guilty or overturning a court decision. You are telling the Edmonton Oilers that this organizational choice does not represent your values.
We stand with E.M. We stand with survivors. We expect better from the Edmonton Oilers.
