On Monday this week I was absolutely delighted to have the chance to sit down with Jackie Doyle-Price, the Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, to talk about #DumpTheScales.
It was brilliant to meet with The Minister and have the opportunity to raise awareness around #eatingdisorders and talk to her about the reality of diagnosis on the ground. She listened, asked all the right questions and gave me the chance to share my personal story giving insight in to what it is like living in recovery.
It was amazing to have her agree to support the campaign! And I am looking forward to working with her on this to help tackle the issues around diagnosis.
Jackie Doyle-Price, Minister for Mental Health, Inequalities and Suicide Prevention said:
"All mental illness should be taken seriously and the guidance is clear - no one with an eating disorder should ever be rejected for vital treatment based solely on their weight or BMI. It is unacceptable that people may be facing this injustice and I thank Hope for her tireless efforts in raising this issue.”
This is a positive step in the right direction but we still have a way to go in making this long term change happen. Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses with anorexia having the highest mortality rate out of all psychiatric illness so it is essential we make this change happen!
Thank you everyone for all your ongoing support! I know progress seems slow at times but we will get there!
