PETITION: SAVE EASTWOOD ARENA - DEMAND FAIR TREATMENT FOR THE NORTH END

To Mayor Andrea Horwath, Cameron Kroetsch and Hamilton City Council,

We, the North End community and residents of Hamilton, are calling for Eastwood Arena to remain open. The Mayor set a precedent as she intervened to save the Stoney Creek Arena. We demand the same commitment to equity, transparency, and preservation of vital community assets in our neighbourhood. This decision proved that when a community speaks, elected officials have the power to listen and protect vital local infrastructure

We want the North End & Ward 2—a diverse, historic, and rapidly growing neighborhood—to be afforded the same respect and consideration. We also deserve representation that fights for our community.

WHY EASTWOOD IS ESSENTIAL

A Matter of Equity: The North End relies on Eastwood Arena for affordable recreation. For many families, this is the only walkable facility available. Recreation is a valuable for youth engagement and diversion
Wellness for Children, Youth and Adults: Facilities such as this, offer numerous benefits, expressly important for vulnerable youth to nurture prosocial relationships, teaching life skills, offering diversion and safety.
Community Value: Hard surface sports have expanded significantly; this is a highly valued facility for that reason.
Growth and Future Planning: With Hamilton’s expansion and the anticipated growth in the Waterfront, closing Eastwood is a short-sighted move that ignores the long-term needs of a growing neighbourhood. It cannot close without an imminent action plan to revitalize.

OUR CALL

We call on Mayor Horwath and City Council to apply the same standard of community advocacy used in Stoney Creek to the North End:

Immediately halt the permanent closure of Eastwood Arena.
Commit to a revitalization plan that ensures the facility remains safe and operational in the near and distant future.
Ensure equitable access to recreation by protecting the only arena serving the lower city’s North End,

SHOW US WE MATTER.

If one community’s arena is worth saving, so is ours. Do not leave the North End behind.

SAVE EASTWOOD. DEMAND EQUITY. PROTECT OUR COMMUNITY.
