Over the past year, I have challenged what I regard as weak leadership in East Renfrewshire Council.
Huntly Park
I started a petition to save Huntly Park, after years of uncertainty about its future. As the petition's success grew, I was told by an East Renfrewshire councillor that it was not under threat. However, just before the Scottish Parliament elections, councillors passed a resolution to protect it. Why protect something that is not under threat? We saved the park, but I didn't like what I saw one bit. My eyes were opened.
Giffnock Library
In the summer, I attended a Giffnock Community Council meeting as its secretary and I listened as we were briefed by the community councillor (with the lead on planning matters) on concerns that Giffnock Library could close and the service be moved to a new £50 million complex in Eastwood Park. I could hardly believe what I was hearing. Notably, two East Renfrewshire councillors were present. Neither said the concern was unfounded. I started a petition to save the library. Again, I was told (only then) that there was no threat to the service. While Giffnock Community Council did not endorse the petition, over 1000 in the community did. If anyone attempts to move Giffnock Library, I will remind them of both the assurances I have been given and the public opposition to it.
Fenwick Road Bollards
Now I look at the bollards. No one is saying that my concerns regarding them are unfounded - they can't, for they are obvious. I can't act alone. I can only act as part of my community and that is what we are doing, as one. The bollards are not fit for purpose, they are a costly drain on resources and they look terrible.
Together, as a community, we will provide the much needed leadership for Giffnock and Thornliebank. By continuing to share this petition, you will be assisting with that.
