The East Kolkata Wetlands, a Ramsar site since 2002, is facing threats due to encroachments and proposed development projects like the logistics hub at Nazirabad.

The Ramsar Convention emphasizes  "wise use"  of wetlands, balancing conservation and sustainable development.

Environmentalist S.M Ghosh raises concerns that changing land use without proper assessment violates this principle .

The East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority (EKWMA) is responsible for conservation and management. However, allegations of inconsistent enforcement and lack of transparency surround the approval process for projects like the logistics hub.

The Calcutta High Court has ruled against altering land use in the EKW, citing the 2006 EKW Conservation and Management Act.

Recent rulings indicate ongoing concerns about encroachments and inadequate environmental impact assessments .
