Don't Rip the Heart out of Ealing

Don't Rip the Heart out of Ealing
The Issue
Ealing Council has considered plans to redevelop Arcadia-9-42 The Broadway that will mean a vast swathe of the centre of Ealing being demolished. The scheme was approved by Ealing’s Planning Committee on 24th February. The petition will continue as the Victorian Society and other organisations have requested a 'call-in' from the Secretary of State for the application to be reviewed.
Historic England, the Government’s adviser on the nation’s heritage is horrified. It has told the Council that if the scheme is approved and built, the Council should review the entire Ealing Town Centre conservation area. They would advise the conservation area would no longer merit its status.
If the Conservation Area is de-designated developers will be able to demolish any buildings in central Ealing except listed ones without any prior notice. This would destroy the centre of Ealing as we know it.
Historic England urges a different approach. They say ‘it would be possible to achieve many of the development aims without the requirement for such wide-scale demolition.’
We agree with Historic England. Development is perfectly feasible without destroying the old centre.
Please add your name to our petition not to allow this historic area at the heart of the borough to be opened up to unchecked demolition.
