Hi folks, a couple of notable updates from the last week:
It is encouraging to note, esteemed paediatricians and healthcare experts have collectively appealed to the Australian Government for more action for the protection of children in Gaza. Lead by Distinguished Professor Fiona Stanley AC, 2003 Australian of the Year & designated National Treasure, along side Honorary Specialist Paediatrician Dr Suezanne Packer AO & 2019 Senior Australian of the Year.
The letter affirms what we're standing for, that is: despite a seemingly intractable and wicked problem, our government and federal representatives can and must do more. This can be achieved by ending arms deals including any trade profiting from the war on Gaza, & ensuring international laws are abided by such as allowing for effective and efficient delivery of aid to children and those in need.
Furthermore, on Wednesday, Foreign Minister, Penny Wong took a hardline in publicly advocating for the recognition of Palestine as an independent nation. This is of significance on the basis that a two-state solution has been buried since 2021. I hope Senator Wong remains unwavering in pursuit of this foreign policy despite scathing criticism from the Opposition. If so, Australia will be in good company with Ireland and Spain, who have been actively garnering support from other EU nations.
In other news, Netanyahu's government policies are being heavily criticised by Israeli media and journalists for the lack of restraint, loss of control, and loss of sight in returning hostages. For example, high profile previously-staunch Zionist such as Thomas L. Friedman call on the Netanyahu Government for a ceasefire, pulling troops out of Gaza, & to rethink its war strategy.
Lastly, after a non-response to my letter on Sunday, I followed up with the Office of Dr Monique Ryan with an updated list of signatures. Before the weekend, I received a response that Dr Ryan will not comment on the situation for fear of toxic discourse. However, with Gazans including 60,000 pregnant women facing imminent food starvation as a war tactic - it is not enough. We must remain steadfast in our support and appeal for the protection of innocent children not withstanding on ground Australians humanitarians, such as journalist turn aid-workers Tess Ingram from indiscriminate persecution.
Please continue to share this petition with your network, sign this petition to end arms deals, start a conversation, and write to your local federal member.
In solidarity,
Qiqi
