Ducks crossing signs for Mannering Park

The issue

Mannering Park is home to a lot of ducks and other wildlife. Holiday-ers wouldn't know to be cautious of ducks walking across the road, and some local unfortunately speed and don't pay enough attention.

Signs like "slow down, ducks crossing" and "injured wildlife? Call Wildlife A.R.C 4325 0666", would be a big help to show that we in this community care about our wildlife.

Vales road is the main road and ducks often cross near Campbell pde and Kevin st when they go to/from the pond/lake.

During Spring and Summer, the ducks have ducklings and then in January the adult ducks moult and can't fly for a couple of weeks. People need to be extra mindful during this time when the ducks are more vulnerable and can't fly to get away quickly. They sometimes group up for safety in numbers. At the moment (late Jan) there's a group of 50 walking around together, and they cover both lanes of the road when they cross it.

Ducks and ducklings are so defenceless and common prey for other birds, dogs, cats, foxes etc.... Road signs could help us decrease the number of injured, orphaned and killed ducks and other animals, including pets.

Ways you can help:

  • Sign this petition.
  • Email the Central Coast Council with a link to this petition and ask for signs in Mannering Park.
  • Become a wildlife rescuer/carer volunteer with Wildlife A.R.C.
  • SLOW DOWN, don't speed, be aware of animals around the road and wait for them with your hazard lights on, if it all possible. In 50 zones its nothing to slow down and wait for a couple of seconds, a car wouldn't crash into your backside if they are paying attention and not speeding.
