The Issue

URGENT: We ask the Department of Justice, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, NY Mayor Eric Adams, Governor Kathy Hochul, other federal & NY authorities to drop the wrongful federal charge of terrorism in the case of Luigi Mangione. His case involves an isolated incident with a health insurance executive. Any alleged actions seem related to personal experiences with our flawed healthcare system, as described by a United Healthcare official, not terrorist activity or affiliations.

Writings possibly credited to Mangione state that the subject acted alone, not in conjunction with any group, terrorist or otherwise. This supposed manifesto conveys a belief & sense of despair that the author could not help himself or others in our broken healthcare system. Acting alone, no coercion or intimidation was possible, according to the definition of terrorism. Instead, this story exposed similar public sentiments & experiences with health insurance corruption, class divisions, & healthcare politics around the country.

As an engineer, Mangione would be inclined to examine the health system structurally. Analyses pointing out unethical corporate practices for profit do not reflect terrorist ideology or similar radicalization. On the contrary, our entire nation agrees our medical, insurance, & disability systems are corrupt & dysfunctional. Healthcare horror stories & fundraisers on social media are common; they showcase how healthcare can easily ruin the lives, finances, stability, & mental health of those who use the system at their sickest & most vulnerable. This frequent scenario is the backdrop for Mangione’s purported actions, not terrorism by any stretch of the definition.

A federal charge of terrorism that comes with the death penalty makes no sense in Mangione’s case. These punishments are too extreme for a very young man who appears to be suffering tremendously in the aftermath of serious health issues. Any alleged actions require consequences, but also the opportunity for help & rehabilitation, and certainly not the end of a young life characterized by extraordinary achievement & good citizenship.

These charges seem politicized due to timing, rather than supportive of restorative justice practices espoused by most NY lawmakers & politicians today. A charge involving the death penalty is cruel & unusual punishment, especially in NY where the death penalty no longer exists.

We who empathize with Luigi Mangione's story & its message demand that the federal charge of terrorism & possibility of the death penalty be dismissed immediately.

Thank you,

A Patient Advocate & Supporters of Luigi Mangione
