The Issue

Pets and livestock, wildlife, and people with PTSD and Autism are terrified, traumatized, and distressed due to the sound of exploding fireworks. Each year, the traditional 4th of July fireworks display on Pilot Butte, while visually spectacular, causes undue stress and anxiety in our community. It's time for Bend to take a thoughtful but giant step forward.

Fireworks have long been a part of our Independence Day celebrations, but it's important to recognize the significant negative impact they can have. Our local Humane Society is inundated after year with dogs that go missing after being scared by the sound of fireworks, often leading to heartbreaking outcomes for their families. For veterans and individuals suffering from PTSD, loud noises from fireworks can trigger severe emotional distress, disrupting their lives during this festive season. Moreover, the sudden and loud explosions also unsettle local wildlife, causing ecological harm that we can prevent.

We propose an innovative solution: replacing the traditional fireworks with a stunning drone light show or silent fireworks. Drone light shows are not only mesmerizing and environmentally friendly, but they've also been successfully implemented in other cities as a modern alternative, creating awe-inspiring visual experiences without the noise. Additionally, silent fireworks offer a similar sensory spectacle without the intense sounds that accompany traditional fireworks.

By adopting drone light shows or silent fireworks, Bend would be taking a leadership position in balancing our celebratory traditions with the well-being of our citizens and environment. This change would reflect a thoughtful and evolving understanding of community needs and inclusivity, allowing everyone to enjoy the holiday without fear or distress.

Please join us in urging the local government officials, event organizers, and sponsors to embrace this proposal. Let’s create a 4th of July celebration that is inclusive, innovative, and considerate of all our community's members. Sign this petition today to bring about positive change for our beloved town.
