Last night, the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Resolution Supporting the Dredging and Jetty Repair of the Little Wicomico River Entrance at Smith Point.

This is an important step forward — one step closer to being competitive for state and federal funding in the 2026 cycle.

A heartfelt thank you to District 5 Supervisor Chip Williams for helping advance the resolution. His leadership and responsiveness to our community’s concerns made a real difference.

And thank you to everyone who came out in support — especially the large number of Smith Point Sea Rescue volunteers. Their unmistakable neon yellow jackets sent a visible, powerful message about safety, access, and the urgency of restoring this federally authorized navigation channel.

This milestone reflects months of teamwork among residents, watermen, marinas, oyster growers, first responders, charter boat captains, and our government partners.

What’s next:
The permit work is being led by NNPDC, and we will continue closely tracking the Joint Permit Application (JPA) process, including the status of dredge material placement agreements, which are essential for the project to be ready for the 2026 funding cycle.

In parallel, we’ll be increasing our outreach to elected representatives and strengthening connections with maritime and community groups to build even broader support — helping ensure our shared voice is strong when this project enters the 2026 funding process.
