Appalachian State University Instructors Petition Regarding Covid-19
The Issue
We, the undersigned instructors at Appalachian State University, including tenured and tenure-track faculty, fixed-term faculty, non-tenure-track faculty, and graduate teaching assistants, call on Dr. Sheri Everts, Dr. Heather Norris, and the Appalachian State University administration to ensure the following:
1. That no instructor will be required to teach in-person if they have any concerns over their personal health related to Covid-19/SAR-CoV2 during Fall Semester 2020 and that no instructor will be required to disclose the nature of their personal health concerns if they request to teach fully online. Further, instructors have the option to switch to fully online at any point in the semester if personal health concerns related to Covid-19/SAR-CoV2 emerge.
2. That during Fall Semester 2020 all members of the Appalachian State University community will be required to follow CDC and ACHA guidelines while on the campus of Appalachian State University (or affiliated distance education locations), including but not limited to the wearing of masks and the practice of physical distancing.
3. That Appalachian State University develop and implement a program of regular and ongoing testing for Covid-19/SAR-CoV2 for all staff, students, and faculty who will be physically on the campus of Appalachian State University (or affiliated distance learning locations) during Fall Semester 2020.
4. That Appalachian State University immediately and throughout Fall Semester 2020 provide daily updates on the status of Covid-19/SAR-CoV2 virus transmission and quarantine status on the campus of Appalachian State University (and affiliated distance learning locations).
5. That Appalachian State University communicate the aforementioned policies to the faculty and post them in an easily accessible website and that the Chancellor report on the implementation of these policies at the Fall Faculty and Staff meeting and the September Faculty Senate meeting.
