The Issue

We, the undersigned alumni, family, and friends of Alabama State University mourn the passing of revered professor, Dr. Ralph J. Bryson.  To honor Dr. Bryson's legacy at Alabama State University, we seek the attention and support of Alabama State University's president, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., in naming or renaming an academic building, preferably Edward McGehee Hall, in Dr. Bryson's honor.

WHEREAS, Dr. Ralph J. Bryson's life history includes, but is not limited to: being born and raised in Cincinnati (Ohio); a World War II veteran, graduate of University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University; a distinguished academic career at Alabama State University that spans more than 59 years; a stalwart leader within the Civil Rights Movement; distinguished member of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church; an accomplished and life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Ralph J. Bryson arrived at Alabama State College for Negroes in 1953, by 1963, became a full professor and department chair, a responsibility he fulfilled with distinction for nearly fifty years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Ralph J. Bryson served Alabama State University, its students, and families through his work as an English professor, chair of the Humanities Division, Faculty Senate member, chair of the Lyceum Committee, advisor to the Beta Zeta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and the University's Marshal at which time he carried the grand mace during commencement ceremonies.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the undersigned petitioners believe that Dr. Ralph J. Bryson's academic, instructional, and philanthropic legacy aligns with Alabama State University's mission: excellence in teaching, research, and service.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that if this petition leads the university's administration and board to honor our request, further action from the petitioners shall include work with the Alabama State University Foundation to create a scholarship fund in Dr. Ralph J. Bryson's honor.
