DR. KIZZA BESIGYE: Appeal for Justice petition to the United Nations and world leaders.
The Issue
Appeal for Justice and Human Rights: Petition to the United Nations and world leaders.
We, the undersigned, urgently appeal to the United Nations and world leaders for intervention regarding the grave injustices occurring in Uganda. Our immediate concern is the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent political figure, alongside all political prisoners unjustly detained for exercising their fundamental human rights.
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a critic of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's regime, was kidnapped in Nairobi, Kenya, tortured, and brought to Uganda, where he was charged in a military court in Kampala. Despite a ruling by Uganda's Supreme Court deeming it unconstitutional for civilians to be tried in military courts, Dr. Besigye remains imprisoned in Luzira prison on the outskirts of Kampala.
The government of President Museveni continues to detain Dr. Besigye and other political prisoners in an attempt to silence dissent and prevent their participation in the upcoming elections of 2026---Dr. Kizza Besigye’s arrest and detention are political as Museveni fears him. This illegal detention without charge is a clear violation of fundamental human rights as outlined in the Uganda constitution, the African Charter on Human Rights, and the UN Declaration on Human Rights.
These political prisoners have endured severe violations of their rights, undermining the principles of democracy and freedom that the United Nations upholds. We implore the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the international community to recognize these human rights abuses and take swift action to ensure the release of those wrongfully imprisoned in Uganda by the military court at the behest of President Museveni and his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Yoweri Museveni's reign of terror in Uganda continues unabated, and it is imperative that justice prevails and the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, are protected.
As concerned Ugandans, we are deeply troubled by the ongoing atrocities orchestrated by Museveni's son, Mr. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who holds the position of Chief of Defense Forces (UPDF), and the threats on Uganda, including openly threatening to execute Dr. Kizza Besigye and all those who oppose his father's oppressive regime. He has even gone as far as stating that Dr. Besigye will only leave prison in a coffin.
Dr. Besigye, who has survived two poisoning attempts while incarcerated in Luzira Prison since November 2024, is in grave danger. Fearing for his life, he has resorted to preparing his own meals provided by his family. However, the prison authorities have callously denied him the food brought by his loved ones, prompting Dr. Besigye to embark on a hunger strike.
The time for decisive action is now. We implore the United Nations and the international community to stand in solidarity with the people of Uganda in their quest for justice and human rights. We cannot allow Uganda to descend into the genocide that Museveni is orchestrating.
We, the undersigned, urgently appeal for the intervention of the UN and the international community in securing the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and all other political prisoners unjustly detained in Uganda. We also seek international support in reinstating democratic values in our country.
We express our gratitude in advance for your prompt intervention.
