Petitioners, please allow me this indulgence. I have received many requests about the books I've written and it is very time-consuming answering individual queries. So, in a nutshell, here are the details for those seeking copies: 'THE WAR WITHIN' (465 pages) was initially published by one of Australia's most prestigious publishers (Murdoch Books) in 2008, and became a best-seller within weeks, and was immediately re-printed. It received more reviews than just about any other Australian memoir, and I was invited to speak at more than 180 libraries in relation to it (more engagements of that type than any other author in the history of Australian literature). In 2011, I added nine additional chapters to the original version, and it is now available: - in hard copy from the National Vietnam Veterans Museum, Victoria (03) 5956 6400) and - in Kindle format from Amazon Books. - there is also a wonderful audio version published by the Association for Guide Dogs, Western Australia (13 hours of reading). (Bob Rogers, Radio 2CH, Sydney) - "Don Tate is a brilliant writer....'The War Within' is a fantastic book...an excellent read.." (Howard Sattler, Radio 6PR, Perth) - "'The War Within' is an extraordinary memoir, an unabashed account of one raucous Australian life...." (Paul Ham, international journalist and author) - "...narrated with vivid authority, (it) at once disarms, repels, gives hope, as its narrator summons inner demons beyond anything that the war in Vietnam had made." (The Sydney Morning Herald) - "..a book for every Australian...brilliantly written…a tragic account of a soldier who struggles to survive in a constant storm of government stupidity, neglect, and indifference, declares war, and fights back to seek justice and recognition for himself and his comrades.." (Brigadier George Mansford (Rtd) AM) - "...a knock 'em out, drag 'em out type of book, permeated with anger (but) there is a richness and a vibrance in Tate's writing style...the reader grows with the author as he struggles through, and with, life....quite a remarkable man, a raucous Australian." (Brigadier Neil Weekes (Rtd) AM MC) - "War stories don't come much darker than this. Gritty stuff." (Sunday Telegraph) - "...an inspiring, yet horrific journey....The insight he gives on life in the Vietnam War is heartbreaking..... graphic and explicit at times..” (Sharon Athanosos) - “...a confronting read…about sex, violence, revenge, remorse, regret, mateship, pride, patriotism, conflict, love, loss, estrangement….” (The Illawarra Mercury) - “'The War Within' is engaging, compelling, very graphic... a gutsy read, controversial and confronting…. ‘blokey’, but very well-written….” (Clare Calvert, Reviewer for Tony Delroy’s ‘Nightlife’ on ABC Radio) - “a harrowing tale…" (The Cairns Post) - “.amongst us walk men and women harmed by war’s ravages.” (Mt Buller Times) - “..a raw and very powerful voice…” (Bendigo Advertiser) - “ a shocking search for manhood by an alienated man fuelled by anger, alcohol, and women, where the only heroes are the Anzacs.” (Northern Miner, Mt Isa) - “..this is the story of a man rising above his past, of the inter-relationship of faith and circumstance, and of the love of a virtuous woman…’ (Gympie Times) - “Tate describes in brutal detail his journey of self-discovery…” (Daily Mercury, Mackay) - “..raw, confronting, honest, brutal…tears apart the romanticised image of the Anzacs to describe the harsh, confronting realities of war and the repercussions of life after……” (Glen Innes Examiner) “….a terrific book……”- Michael Smith (4BC Radio, Brisbane) - “….tears at the heartstrings….” (Adelaide Advertiser) - “Don Tate’s “The War Within” is a compelling, often confronting, memoir by an extraordinary talent. It details a most extraordinary life- from Don Tate’s early days in a relatively lawless, impoverished suburb of Ellen Grove, south-west of Brisbane, through his service as an infantryman in the most unpopular war Australian soldiers ever fought, and the struggle for acceptance and forgiveness in the decades afterwards. Don takes us onto the battlefields of Vietnam seen from the perspective of the lowly private, as his units battle the Viet Cong in ambushes and bunker assaults- before being he is machine-gunned. Then follows more than two years of hospitalisation- and the realisation that his disabilities are profound and permanent- he is now ‘second-class’. Stripped of what he describes as ‘the essence of the man”, and abandoned by a country that sent him off to war, Don wades through life in the reckless pursuit of worldliness and ambitions. Lost in a world that has no appreciation of the what jungle warfare does to a man, and could care less, Don marries a woman whose Christian ethic provides the realisation that faith is the backbone of the human spirit. She nurses him through years of rehabilitation, and by virtue of her own resilience and example, re-kindles his faith in the God of his youth. While Tate takes broad brush-strokes to Australiana, the essence of “The War Within” lies in chronicling the inter-relationship of faith and circumstance, and what it is that defines a man....” –(Sharon Robson, Independent Book Reviewer) - “.....brutally honest....left me breathless.....sometimes I felt I had a hurricane by the tail....” (Paul Kinney) ANZACS BETRAYED: Described by author/journalist Frank Walker as '...a brilliant piece of writing about events unparalleled in Australian military history.." This book contains all the evidence (photographs/ documents/ accounts/ letters/ etc etc) relating to the military corruption surrounding the 2nd D&E Platoon matter. 'Anzacs Betrayed' is also available from the National Vietnam Veterans Museum in hard copy; or in Kindle format from SMASHWORDS at: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/380433 I have also placed a video about the book (and a lot of other information concerning it) at the Facebook pages- 'MEMOIR-THE WAR WITHIN' and DON TATE, WRITER ANZACS BETRAYED Hope that answers all queries.
