Reinstatement of Dr. Shaoxian Yu as the Associate Director of GMU ODIME

Reinstatement of Dr. Shaoxian Yu as the Associate Director of GMU ODIME
The Issue
Dear GMU Students and Alumni,
In February, the leadership of George Mason University separated Dr. Shaoxian Yu from his position as Associate Director of the Office of Diversity Inclusion and Multicultural Education (ODIME). He has been transferred to the INTO Mason program with the intent to release him from his contract in November. This was done without cause.
Dr. Yu has worked for the George Mason community for over 13 years and is only a few years away from retirement. This egregious decision to release him affects his retirement, his family, and his livelihood. Furthermore, the 11 student organizations and many students he advises have lost their mentor and friend. With the removal of Dr. Yu, organizations in the Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC) have been left without an advisor without any prior notice.
Firing one of the few employees that upholds GMU’s “commitment” to diversity, well-being, and student support is an act that deserves attention. Every student Dr. Yu has supported throughout their time at GMU must be made aware of the actions of our administration.
Because we believe our university administration should be held accountable for their actions, we have drafted a list of demands that include reinstating Dr. Yu (see below).
Dr. Yu has done so much for the organizations and individuals he has worked with during his time at George Mason. Even during this tough time, he is still concerned about his students and only wishes to be back at ODIME so he can continue to support them.
Please sign our petition to show that you want him back in ODIME too!
