Stop and Reclaim: Welland's Downtown Future

The Issue

Impacted Populations

Downtown Welland affects a broad spectrum: residents, business owners, workers, visitors, and the homeless. Their safety and quality of life are compromised by problems like poor lighting, crime, homelessness, economic stagnation, and few attractions. The entire community's well-being is on the line.

Uncertain Future of Downtown

Decades of decline have darkened Welland's downtown, symbolized by banks exiting the area. As businesses close and essential services fade, property values, vacancies, and community pride suffer. But this downward spiral isn't inevitable. With decisive action, we can revive the heart of the city, bringing back businesses, boosting the economy, and rekindling a sense of community. It's critical to hold our City Governance accountable.

Urgency of Timely Action

Welland's remarkable growth in the past few years demands action. This growth brings both challenges and opportunities. We can't hide behind funding shortages anymore. The city stands on the cusp of significant revitalization with its booming economy and rising population. Seizing this momentum means making the most of our resources and fostering a vibrant downtown. The moment for transformative action is now, ensuring a bright future for every citizen and stakeholder.

CURRENT ONGOING ACTION:

A proposal to revitalize downtown Welland was submitted to the City Council on August 18, 2023. We're urging the Council to prioritize downtown revitalization.

Our primary objectives are:

  1. Presenting the community's priorities and concerns to the City Council, emphasizing the importance of rebuilding trust between residents and city governance.
  2. Persuade the City Council to unanimously sponsor prioritizing the Downtown Revitalization.
  3. Collaborating with the City Council to develop a flexible and transparent 3–5-year plan that can be shared with the public, offering a clear path for progress.

Transparency, accountability, and shared responsibility are essential for unlocking downtown Welland's potential.

Collective Proposal Summary:

  1. Downtown Safety Concerns: The city faces genuine safety concerns in its downtown area.
  2. Homelessness Demands Comprehensive Planning: Addressing homelessness requires a comprehensive and well-thought-out plan
  3. Downtown Revitalization: A revitalization effort is imperative to rescue businesses and restore vitality to the city's core.
  4. City Investment in Downtown: The city must proactively invest in downtown; relying solely on developers is insufficient.

Let us make a difference one voice at a time!
