GEORGE FLOYD POLICE REFORM ACT
The Issue
George Floyd Police Reform Act includes a number of changes including:
- Police officers with a history of misconduct be prohibited from working in law enforcement in any United States county. Police officers who get fired for misconduct in one county often go on to work in different counties or states; we must weed them out of the system entirely.
- Immediate termination of any law enforcement officer who has shot an unarmed person.
- Increased de-escalation training, body cam footage public release policies, utilization of "non-lethal" weapons as primary police weapon, and implicit bias training for all police officers.
- Banning of restraint practices involving pressure applied to the head, neck, chest, and vital organs as an appropriate apprehension/ detainment mechanism allowed by law enforcement. Such techniques can cause asphyxiation, heart attack, internal rupture, brain injuries, coma, death, & increase in panic attacks (often resulting in erratic behavior, only escalating the situation). New guidelines need to be established to ban such apprehension techniques.
- Introduction of racism-related questions be added into the poligraph tests administered to potential law enforcement canidates & increased mental health pre-screening as part of the hiring process.
- Demand of a bill that requires all police departments in this country be investigated by an independent civilian review boards. This review board would have the power to investigate police, and also bring charges against police. These boards must have subpoena power. These boards must not include current police officers or relatives of police officers. The people on these boards must not be appointed by local Mayors, or Governors. We want the ability to vote for the members of these boards and have them give us the accountability and transparency which is needed to protect the people.
