Globally there are more honey bees than other types of bee and pollinating insects, so it is the world's most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees, but also by other insects, birds and bats. The main reasons for global bees-decline are industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens and climate change. The loss of biodiversity, destruction of habitat and lack of forage due to monocultures and bee-killing pesticides are particular threats for honeybees and wild pollinators. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) causes significant economic losses because many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by western honey bees. A large amount of speculation has surrounded a family of pesticides called neonicotinoids* as having caused CCD. It's true that the extinction of bees would mean the end of humanity.
