CANCELED EVENT: North Avenue AMTRAK Demonstration Today, 2/22 - Friday, 2/23

Carson WardBaltimore, MD, United States
Feb 22, 2024

Friends, Parents, Neighbors and Supporters —

It’s with a heavy heart that I have to share this: Amtrak has proceeded to demolish one of our last historic commercial buildings yesterday (across the street from Dorothy I. Height elementary school during school hours) — a day earlier than the obscure public notice.

I believe the photo above embodies the level of miscommunication and lack of respect we should expect from Amtrak moving forward. I believe that the failure to contain dust and failure to warn the surrounding communities of asbestos hazards embodies this, as well.

It’s been over 40 days and Amtrak has not addressed a single question or concern from the community. Amtrak did not inform us that the buildings would be demolished yesterday nor follow the agreed upon steps documented in the Final Section 106 Agreement of the National Historic Preservation Act.

This image should not only enrage you but make it clear how important it is to organize now! Please let us know if you can make yourself available to help us organize (remotely or in person). You can send your name and email to bpwg@reservoirhillassociation.org with the subject line 'VOLUNTEER: JOIN WEST BALTIMORE'S ORGANIZING EFFORTS'. We need support with:

  • Letter Writing
  • Outreach to Representatives
  • Community Outreach
  • Press Outreach
  • Protest Organizing
  • and More!

Although we will not protest today, 2/22 and tomorrow, 2/23 since the buildings have been removed, we do need to make a visible show of our disappointment in the lack of action of so many.
