Petition updateDon't postpone COP26, UN Climate Change Conference, move it online instead!

Nov-Dec 2020 UNFCCC virtual event Climate Change Dialogues

Dear supporters for a virtual COP26,

We have started the current petition in June 2020 asking the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Bureau to demonstrate adaptation to the changes caused by Covid-19 and to keep organising the UN Climate Change Conference, the COP26, as a virtual/online event over some or all of the dates scheduled for November 2020 in Glasgow, Scotland.

We were 1134 supporters to this call, while not being organised or supported by any organisation but just by our sense of urgency facing Climate Change. We have engaged and exchanged with the UNFCCC Bureau, The Scottish Government, the COP26 Presidency, and over 60 governmental and non-governmental organisations, all documented.

The UNFCCC latest letter reply informed that they will organise a virtual/online event this year between 23 November – 4 December 2020 called the Climate Change Dialogues in which COP26 Members States, Observer States and other stakeholders will showcase progress and achievements on climate action in 2020.

The Scottish Government have admitted that new ways of engagement are necessary to deliver the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 next year while recovering from Covid-19.

The petition will be now be closed without a victory as COP26 virtual event in 2020 failed to be organised. The UNFCCC and our governments have not reacted fast enough and with adaptation solutions. This can only make us think that action is in our hands to tackle the risks from Climate Change and that we can not count on intergovernmental Climate action.

I believe our voices have contributed bringing to the realisation that flexibility, adaptation and resilience are necessary and that postponement is not a solution. Please dial-in to the Climate Change Dialogue of the UNFCCC on 23 November 2020, see you there.

Best,

Maria
