Just one party has pledged to keep Ada Belfeild as a council run care home, with the others seemingly happy to have a third party run it. This is what the Conservatives plan, so there really is no difference!

 
There was a 'Hustings' about Ada Belfield last week at the Strutt centre. A hustings is an opportunity for the public to ask election candidates questions before an election.

The Conservatives didn't turn up. Neither did Reform.

The main question that was started with was 'What would YOU do to stop Ada Belfield closing if elected?'

Only one candidate directly addressed that question - Cllr Ben Bellamy from Belper Independents.

Ben was clear - at the first opportunity he will table a motion reversing the Conservatives closure plans, and committing the council to council run care homes, rebuilding what is currently being decimated.

Ben challenged the other parties to say they would support the motion - none commited to do so.

More shockingly, the Labour candidate Mary Dwyer, said her preference was for a third party 'not for profit' to run Ada Belfield. Unbelievable.

Ben said "Let's be absolutely clear - if the private sector can run care homes at a healthy profit, the council can run it without making a loss. It is only due to dodgy accounting, such as loading the build cost of the Ada Belfield onto the balance sheet, do they pretend this is not so. To sell a building that cost £14 million for around £500k would be madness."
