This is devastating — hundreds of vulnerable puppies and kittens could be forced into pounds and killed unless the Cairns Regional Council urgently reinstate essential refuge funding.

For 30 years the Young Animal Protection Society (YAPS) has saved, treated and re-housed vulnerable pups and kittens — but Council just scrapped their $35,000 funding.

As a loving owner of 4 rescue pets, I am heartbroken for these little animals. YAPS has just picked up 20 puppies under 4 weeks old, saved from the pound where they’d likely of been killed within days if not rehoused.

This organisation provides an essential role as an animal refuge. Cairns is already swamped with unwanted pets due to the closure of Paws and Claws in Port Douglas and the refurbishment of the RSPCA.
