Don’t Erase Trump’s Impeachments at the National Portrait Gallery

Don’t Erase Trump’s Impeachments at the National Portrait Gallery
The Issue
The National Portrait Gallery has quietly removed references to Donald Trump’s two impeachments and the January 6 insurrection from his presidential exhibit in the “America’s Presidents” hall.
This is not routine curation.
This is political erasure.
The new caption omits the fact that Trump was:
- Impeached twice — the only president in history to be impeached two times
- Charged with incitement of insurrection after the Capitol was attacked on January 6, 2021
- Acquitted in both trials, but still held responsible by a bipartisan majority in the House.
These facts were previously included in the exhibit’s label — and remain archived online — but the current physical display removes them entirely. It now shows only a new photo, taken by a White House photographer, and no mention of the most controversial and consequential events of his presidency.
This change comes amid a wider Trump administration effort to reshape the Smithsonian and force public institutions to reflect a sanitized version of American history. Executive Order 14253 specifically demands the removal of “improper ideology” ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. The White House has threatened the Smithsonian with funding cuts and is moving to install loyalists on its Board of Regents.
This cannot go unchallenged.
We are calling on:
- The National Portrait Gallery to restore the original caption, including Trump’s impeachments and January 6
- Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch to publicly commit to protecting curatorial independence
- The Smithsonian Board of Regents to affirm that all presidents — including Trump — must be presented with historical accuracy.
This isn’t about partisanship. It’s about truth. If we allow key facts to be erased from the public record, we normalize censorship — and we let propaganda win.
Sign this petition to demand that the National Portrait Gallery restore the truth to Trump’s portrait — and refuse to let history be rewritten.
