The Campaign for Healthier Solutions
20 Aug 2015
Dear Supporter, Thanks for taking action to get toxic chemicals out of dollar store products when you signed our Change.org petition sponsored by Jennifer Beals! Every day we are getting closer to 150,000 signatures -- and I wanted to send you this urgent update about the campaign: Over the next few weeks, millions of families will be getting ready to go ‘back to school’ by heading to their local dollar store -- and almost everyone will assume that the products they buy are safe for their children. As you already know, recent testing has shown that a staggering number of products sold at dollar stores contain toxic chemicals, including children’s toys and back to school supplies. We were shocked to find out how many products at dollar stores contain dangerous levels of toxic chemicals. When we sent hundreds of products bought at dollar stores in low-income and people of color communities across the nation to an independent laboratory, what they found was terrible. 81% of the products they tested contained dangerous levels of toxic chemicals -- levels which could impact a child's ability to learn and develop. EVERY FAMILY deserves access to safe products -- children’s toys, and other household goods that are free of harmful chemicals -- but most families don’t realize that products commonly sold at dollar stores are rarely tested and often contain hazardous levels of chemicals like lead and BPA. This isn’t just a toxic chemicals issue, it’s a social justice issue. Children in low-income and people of color neighborhoods already have higher levels of lead and phthalates in their blood, and because their families often rely on dollar stores for products and goods they are being exposed to even greater amounts of toxic chemicals. That just isn’t right. Even worse, the major dollar store chains (Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, Dollar General and 99 Cents Only) are refusing to remove toxic chemicals from the products they sell. So, we’re turning up the heat. We’re planning a massive series of ‘back to school’ protests at dollar stores across the nation to educate families about the toxic chemicals found in their products -- and to shame Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General and 99 Cents Only into protecting our families from toxic chemicals in their products. We can create a safer, less toxic world -- but WE NEED YOUR HELP. Can you make a contribution to support our network of local organizations as we fight to remove toxic chemicals from dollar store products? You can contribute at http://bit.ly/1TWztlG. Your contribution will help us create the kind of exposure that will get dollar stores to protect all families and remove toxic chemicals from their products! Thanks for your support! Sincerely, Jose Bravo Campaign Coordinator The Campaign for Healthier Solutions (Donations to The Campaign for Healthier Solutions are tax-deductible as it is a project of a non-profit organization – we gladly accept foundation support as well! We're a project of the Environmental Justice Health Alliance, which is working to address toxic chemicals in communities of color and low-income communities across the nation.)
