We, the undersigned members of our community, student body, and staff, do respectfully urge the administration of Gilroy High School to consider the immediate reinstatement of Coach Brian Boyd.

The Issue

Brian Boyd has coached the Gilroy Varsity Football program for the past five years; three of which he has served as head coach. In that short time, his athletes managed to maintain a relatively high team GPA average of 2.9 despite fluctuations in the size of the football program as a whole. In previous years, losing athletes to grades has been an issue. However, as a result of his impact, the numbers of ineligible athletes have steadily decreased and the 2014 season reflected no recorded drop-outs once the season started. Aside from an improvement in the academics of his athletes, he brought stability to the financial status of the football program by establishing multiple fundraisers. He has been described as “a financially responsible man with unending patience and the ability to manage difficult situations— always producing an efficient solution.” Coach Boyd is complaint with the rules and expectations of the program and sought to make sure that each aspect or process was done correctly.
Apart from the logistics, Brian Boyd is a kind-hearted man who dedicates his coaching career to the growth and development of his and other athletes in order to transform them into respectable players and distinguished people. Coach Boyd serves as a familial figure to many and always puts the welfare of his athletes before his own. For example, in cases in which an athlete couldn't financially afford to participate in the football program, Brian took it upon himself to fulfill that athlete's strain by offering whatever support he could lend in order to provide the athlete with the opportunity to play.
Winning is not just about the W on the field; it's about building strong character in young athletes and fostering valuable lessons that can be carried forward in their academic, personal and their vocational experiences. Coach Boyd is one of those rare individuals who exhibits these characteristics as demonstrated by the testimonials of his peers, students, and athletes. High school football is a stepping stone for potential athletes but it also serves as an outlet for those who may want to release stress or just have fun. That said, Coach Boyd was able to encourage his athletes to create individual goals which Coach Boyd sought to develop within each of his players.
We live in a community that is divided in terms of high school athletics. Therefore, to assume that winning is entirely based on coaching is a gross misconception. Coach Boyd does not seek to create a unifying model which everyone must follow. Instead, Coach Boyd reaches out to enrich the individual experiences of his athletes and unify them with the goal of winning. That being said, success is a relative term which, winning is not always the highest point.
