Dear Signers,
As this petition gained momentum last week, news outlets such as The Hindu, Hindustan Times, The Independent and ABP News, reported on the incident of discrimination I faced. And late last week, the National Commission for Women took cognisance.

“Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Chief Secretary, Uttar Pradesh to conduct an independent inquiry in the matter & to take strict action against the school authorities. Copy of the letter has also been sent to DM Lakhimpur Kheri,” the NCW wrote on its Twitter handle, referring to one of the news reports about my termination from Uma Devi Children’s Academy, Mohammadi Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.
Thank you so much for your generous support. As a trans woman, I’ve grown a thick skin when it comes to our society’s discriminatory attitudes towards my community. I have a Masters degree and a B.Ed, but have had trouble in landing a job, and I’ve often felt that this has more to do with my gender identity than my competency. It’s also a sentiment that echoes amongst several transgender people.
Many trans women I know, have had trouble in even landing positions such as front-office assistants, because the employer would seldom appoint the transgender candidate over the cisgender candidates in the fray. Educational qualifications have little role to play here.
Let’s continue helping this petition gain momentum. Spread the word and share the short link - Change.org/TransgenderTeacher - in your family WhatsApp group and with your friends and colleagues. Your continued support matters for India’s transgender people.
