The Issue
WHAT IS THIS PETITION FOR?
This petition is to ask the Grand Valley Disc Golf Club to immediately enforce a strict no-tolerance sexual harassment and abuse of power policy. The Grand Valley Disc Golf Club prides itself on providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, and such behavior is antithetical to our core values and principles. Our club, like every other community, deserves leaders who not only promote its growth but also respect its members. Being part of the board demands trust, accountability, and a standard of conduct that is both respectful and ethical. This petition aims to uphold the integrity of the Grand Valley Disc Golf Club.
WHY WAS THIS PETITION CREATED?
Born out of a passion for Disc Golf and a commitment to our community, we, fellow members of the Grand Valley Disc Golf Club, feel compelled to raise our concerns about the inappropriate behavior by Jessi Colombo, also or previously known as Jessi Smith, a current board member of our respected club. Years of Jessi’s actions have caused the Grand Valley Disc Golf Club, the City of Grand Junction Parks and Recreation, local small businesses and the sport of disc golf as a whole to lose supporters, volunteers and individuals wanting to be on the board. A board benefits from a new member by gaining access to fresh perspectives, diverse expertise, new networks, and potentially innovative ideas, which can lead to better decision-making, improved strategic planning, and increased organizational growth, especially when the new member brings unique skills or knowledge not already represented on the board.
Events dating back so far as June 2021 have shown Jessi's severe violation of this trust. Various club members have reported instances of power exploitation and even worse, sexual harassment by Jessi, tainting the spirit of our community. Misuse of power, also known as abuse of power, is the use of authority to gain an unfair advantage at the expense of others. Sexual misconduct is a broad term that includes sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, and other behaviors. Reports and complaints made against Jessi have been about abuse of power, unprofessionalism, unwanted sexual advances, sexual harassment and more. Thes individuals have provided evidence and witnesses. These individuals were only put in contact with Jessi to support, volunteer or join the board/club, but were never able to help the club due to Jessi's inappropriate behavior. For these reasons the club has lost out immeasurably at her hands.
WHO CREATED THIS PETITION?
Direct victims of Jessi found each other and formed a group. We agreed to come together to do what we could for our community. We were advised by a lawyer that a public petition couldn’t include any specific details of the illegal acts, description of bad behavior or personal damage inflicted by Jessi Colombo. However, it could create the impact needed to start a change. For this reason we had the lawyer draw up the petition and posted it knowing that it would be met with skepticism as proof or evidence cannot be provided within it.
GOAL OF THIS PETITION:
The lawyer also advised us to use the petition to directly ask the Board for a private investigation of Jessi where we could then share our personal stories with the Board for their non-public review. Jessi's immediate dismissal is necessary, not just for the safety of each of our members, but also to ensure such actions do not set precedents for the future. With Jessi Colombo no longer on the board we believe that supporters, volunteers and potential new board members will increase exponentially and the benefits will be highly valued by all. We implore the Club's Board of Directors to take immediate action in this regard and maintain our sanctuary.
