Three words describe the Board of Directors at JOMDC: Silence, absence and inaction. Recently, former faculty were informed that Helen Hayes has been removed from the organization, yet the remaining four members of the Board of Directors refuse to acknowledge or take any responsibility for her deliberate discrimination and systematic racism. The Board continues to display contempt towards faculty and staff, exceptionally poor leadership, and financial mismanagement. The Board of Directors refuses to join discussions with faculty and staff, has yet to act on urgent calls for change, and will not step aside to seat effective, true leaders. 

Many former faculty and members of the community have offered resumés in application to join the Board, yet weeks have passed and the Board has shared zero information on the application and selection process. The JOMDC community is crying out for action, yet we are met with silence, absence, and inaction. JOMDC is an organization absent of leaders: How can it survive?

JOIN US in calling and/or emailing the leader of the Board of Directors and demand the Board step aside and make way for real leaders to enact real change.

Hi, my name is ________ and I am a ______ (student, dancer, parent, activist) in the DMV dance community. 

I believed in Joy of Motion Dance Center as an organization that aimed to create and grow a thriving, creative community, celebrating its diversity through dance. However, I have learned that it has become an environment that condones deliberate discrimination, systematic racism, contempt for opinions from faculty and staff, exceptionally poor leadership, financial mismanagement, and an overall lack of respect for the students, faculty, staff, and community. 

Thus, as a community of former faculty, students, parents, and dancers, we demand that you and your fellow Board of Directors step down. Your silence is deafening and your inaction disappointing. We need a Board of Directors that can and will enact real change and lead this organization effectively, equably, and with respect for the community. 

I will not return to Joy of Motion Dance Center in any capacity until REAL leadership is in place. Step down and step aside. Allow those who are ready, willing, and determined to do the work to make Joy of Motion Dance Center a safe, just, and inclusive community -- where dance is truly for everyone once again.
