The Issue

Working as someone deeply involved with children who identify as LGBTQIA+, I've witnessed, firsthand, the challenges they face. In today’s unpredictable political climate, amplified hate towards the LGBTQIA+ community exacerbates these challenges, making life even more difficult for these young individuals. Particularly distressing are the budget cuts to social programs initiated under the Trump administration, which instill fear among social workers about the continued support for our clients.

The barriers faced by BIPOC LGBTQIA+ unhoused youth are multifaceted and deeply entrenched. They are disproportionately affected by homelessness due to systemic discrimination and a lack of supportive resources. According to a report by the True Colors Fund, LGBTQIA+ youth represent up to 40% of the young homeless population, with BIPOC individuals being even more overrepresented in these statistics.

The intersection of racial and sexual identity discrimination results in limited access to essential services like safe housing, healthcare, and mental health support. Many shelters and support systems are not equipped to cater to the unique needs of these youths, often neglecting their specific safety and identity concerns.

We must call on local and state governments to address these gaps. An increase in funding for inclusive social programs, anti-discrimination training for service providers, and the development of specialized shelters for BIPOC LGBTQIA+ youth are pivotal steps towards empowerment and change.

These actions can dramatically alter the trajectory of many young lives, giving them the hope and opportunities they deserve. Please join us in urging policymakers to prioritize the needs of these marginalized groups and dismantle the barriers that have been ignored for far too long. Sign this petition to advocate for a brighter, more inclusive future for all."
