Disclosure and Accuracy in Political Opinion Media

The Issue

Witnessing my own family and friends fall victim to misleading and deceptive practices within political opinion media has deeply concerned me. It is disheartening to see individuals being influenced by information that may not be based on facts, leading to a distorted understanding of important issues. Therefore, I am starting this petition to demand a change in the way political opinion hosts and political opinion entities across all media platforms operate.

In recent years, the line between news reporting and political opinion has become increasingly blurred. Many individuals rely on these platforms for information, assuming they are receiving accurate and unbiased news. However, it is crucial that viewers and readers are made aware when they are engaging with an opinion entity rather than factual reporting.

I propose that all political opinion hosts be required to make a clear disclosure statement at the beginning of their programs or articles. This statement should inform viewers and readers that the content presented is based on personal opinions rather than factual information. By doing so, we can empower individuals to critically analyze the information they consume and make informed decisions.

Furthermore, it is essential to address the misuse of the term "news" by certain entities that do not adhere to its true definition. The word "news" should only be used when referring to accurate reporting based on verified facts. Mislabeling biased opinions as news misleads audiences into believing they are consuming reliable information when this may not be the case.

To support our cause effectively, we must rely on credible sources of data and evidence-based arguments:

1) According to a study conducted by Pew Research Center in 2020, nearly half of Americans believe made-up news causes "a great deal" or "a lot" of confusion about basic facts related to politics.
2) A survey conducted by Gallup in 2021 found that trust in media reached an all-time low with only 32% expressing either a great deal or fair amount of trust in mass media.

By implementing these changes, we can protect the public from misinformation and ensure that individuals are equipped with accurate information to make informed decisions. Let us demand transparency and accuracy in political opinion media, safeguarding the integrity of news reporting for generations to come.

Sign this petition if you believe it is time to require political opinion hosts across all medias to disclose their status as an opinion entity and prohibit the use of the word "news" unless it adheres to its true definition. Together, we can create a more informed society where individuals have access to reliable information and are empowered to think critically about the issues that affect us all.
