The Issue

In Portland, Oregon, many individuals, including my friend, are confronted with a deeply distressing situation in what should be a safe and private space. My friend, a survivor of sexual assault, is faced with an unbearable choice: to forgo the empowerment and health benefits of visiting her gym, or risk encountering individuals who, although identifying as transgender females, retain biological male characteristics, in female locker rooms. This situation exacerbates her anxiety and trauma, reminding her of past violations.

She is not alone. Numerous women feel exposed and vulnerable when sharing such intimate spaces with biological males. Locker rooms should be a sanctuary where one can relax and feel secure, not a source of fear or discomfort.

According to a study by the Women's Liberation Front, over 70% of women who have experienced sexual violence report heightened distress in mixed-sex spaces. This is particularly pertinent to those with traumatic histories, where even the possibility of an encounter can trigger severe anxiety or panic.

Immediate action is required to address this growing concern. We urge local gym owners, policymakers, and community leaders in Portland to implement a solution that respects the privacy and safety of all facility users.
