En los últimos dos meses hemos visto con preocupación como se ha desatado una crisis en La Villita, debido a los planes
de Novak Construction Company de demoler el Centro Comercial de Descuentos, (Discount Mall) en La Villita.

En una reunión el 16 de febrero de 2023, entre el concejal Byron Sigcho López, representante de Novak Construction, representantes de la Ciudad de Chicago, específicamente el Departamento de Planificación y Desarrollo, y representantes de los vendedores de Discount Mall, los representantes de la Ciudad PROMETIERON EXPLORAR y PROPORCIONAR opciones de reubicación LÓGICAS Y ACEPTABLES para los propietarios de pequeñas empresas. Se acordó que la ciudad buscaría una SOLUCIÓN para satisfacer los planes de Novak Construction pero preservando a la vez, la cultura y el futuro de cientos de propietarios de pequeñas empresas ubicados dentro del Discount Mall.

Los funcionarios de la ciudad acordaron que los VENDEDORES en el Discount Mall NO SERÍAN DESALOJADOS sin trabajar primero con ellos para brindarles opciones para la REUBICACIÓN de sus negocios.

Hasta el día de hoy, no se han considerado ni ofrecido opciones a los vendedores, a quienes ahora se les ha informado que serán desalojados a fines de esta semana, 26 de marzo, A PESAR DE CUALQUIER ACUERDO O ARREGLO PREVIO.

El Discount Mall con todas sus características no solo ha aumentado las oportunidades de empleo para las personas que viven en esa área, sino que también ha sido una fuente importante de empleo y desarrollo económico para los ciudadanos estadounidenses.

Los empresarios de pequeños negocios del Discount Mall continúan creando empleos en el área, que son fundamentales para nuestra recuperación económica, y los consumidores han demostrado un poder adquisitivo estable que ha impulsado una economía saludable en el área y ha creado oportunidades de empleo para cientos de personas. Pedimos respetuosamente MÁS tiempo para que estos empresarios se trasladen a un lugar DIGNO Y ADECUADO.
También exigimos la aclaración de la aseveración hecha por la vocera de Novak Construction, Alejandra Moran, quien dijo que los pequeños empresarios han rechazado múltiples ofertas que los funcionarios de la ciudad han ofrecido para la reubicación. ¡ESTO ES UNA MENTIRA!

¡Exigimos que el Departamento de Planificación y Desarrollo de la Ciudad, que prometió encontrar soluciones a corto y largo plazo para los proveedores afectados, actúe ahora! Para que estos pequeños propietarios no sean desplazados de su lugar de trabajo.

El Instituto Binacional de Desarrollo Humano, junto con el SBDC-BIHD, considera que se debe encontrar una solución a la reubicación de los comerciantes, quienes han brindado sus productos a sus clientes desde 1991, por más de 30 años.

In the last two months, we have watched with concern as a crisis has been unleashed in Little Village due Novak Construction Company’s plans to demolish the Little Village Discount Mall.

In a zoom meeting on February 16, 2023, between Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez, a representative of Novak Construction, representatives from the City of Chicago, specifically the Department of Planning and Development, and representatives of the Discount Mall vendors, the City PROMISED to EXPLORE and PROVIDE LOGICAL AND ACCEPTABLE relocation options for the small business owners. It was agreed that the city would seek a SOLUTION to satisfy the plans of Novak Construction while preserving the culture and future of hundreds of small business owners.

The city officials agreed NOT TO evict the VENDORS in the Discount Mall without first working with them to PROVIDE OPTIONS for RELOCATING their businesses.

No options were considered or offered to the vendors, who have now been informed that they will be evicted at the end of this week, March 26, DESPITE ANY PREVIOUS AGREEMENT OR ARRANGEMENT.

Not only will this action affect many small businesses, but it will also destroy
a center of cultural connection and reduce economic diversity. This mall served as a town square, critical in meeting the needs of the Mexican and Latino consumers in Chicago and served as a hallmark of the cultural character of the Little Village neighbourhood.

With all its features, the Discount Mall has increased employment opportunities for those living in that area. It has also been an important source of employment and economic development for American citizens.

Novak Company and the City of Chicago need to know that these small businesses need to stay open to continue to grow
their economy and that of their families, particularly as our economy begins to reopen. Entrepreneurs at the Discount Mall continue to create jobs in the area, which are critical to our economic recovery, and
consumers have shown stable buying power that has fueled a healthy economy in the area and created employment
opportunities for hundreds of people. These entrepreneurs not only support themselves and their families but have been
a vital source of revitalising the Little Village community for many years.

We respectfully ask for more time for these business owners to move to a
DECENT AND SUITABLE PLACE.

We also demand clarification of the statement given by the Novak Construction spokeswoman, Alejandra Moran, who
said that small business owners have rejected multiple offers that city officials have offered for relocation. THIS IS A LIE.

We demand that the City's Planning and Development Department, which promised to find short- and long-term solutions
for affected vendors, act now! So that these small owners are not displaced from their workplaces.

The Binational Institute of Human Development, along with the SBDC-BIHD, believes that a solution must be found to relocate the merchants, who have provided their products to their customers since 1991, for more than 30 years.
