Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) is not an independent or public service media organization. It is a state-controlled propaganda apparatus operating under the direct authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran, playing an active and systematic role in repression, large-scale disinformation, and the psychological terror imposed on the people of Iran.

For decades, IRIB has functioned as an extension of the state’s security and intelligence machinery. It consistently spreads official lies, dehumanizes protesters, labels dissenters as “enemies,” and broadcasts forced confessions obtained under torture. It mocks victims of state violence, justifies mass killings, arbitrary detentions, executions, and actively diverts international attention away from crimes against humanity committed by the Iranian authorities. This is not journalism—this is coordinated propaganda in service of terror.

In the aftermath of mass killings and brutal crackdowns, IRIB has repeatedly aired content that ridicules the dead and injured, trivializes state violence, and shields perpetrators from accountability. Such actions constitute psychological warfare against both the Iranian population and the global public. Media that actively participates in intimidation, incitement, and repression is not neutral; it is an operational component of a violent system.

Just as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been recognized as a terrorist organization for its military and paramilitary actions, IRIB must be recognized as a terrorist propaganda organization for its central role in information warfare, public intimidation, disinformation campaigns, and the normalization of state violence. Terror does not operate only through weapons—it also operates through media that launders crimes and silences truth.

We call on governments, international institutions, and human rights bodies to take immediate action by:

• Designating IRIB as a terrorist-affiliated propaganda organization
• Imposing targeted sanctions on IRIB and its senior executives
• Banning IRIB broadcasts, partnerships, and content distribution internationally
• Holding IRIB leadership accountable for complicity in crimes against humanity

Silence, mockery, and satire in the face of massacre are not freedom of speech.

They are instruments of terror.

The world must stop legitimizing state violence disguised as media.
