The Issue

The Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts is not just a school to me, it is an embodiment of African American history in Northeast Florida. Emerging from the foundations laid in the 1800's by Rev. Samuel Darnell, who made an unshakeable commitment to empowering African Americans through education by founding the Cookman Institute, it represents a beacon of racial progress and resilience. This was not just an institution, but the first of its kind in the state of Florida, specifically geared towards academic and religious training of teachers belonging to the African American community.

Today, the Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts stands testament to this legacy. Its significance goes beyond the realms of education, interweaving with the social, cultural and racial fabric of the community, and representing an enduring symbol of our journey and growth. It is not just a place of learning, but a historical landmark that testifies to our past, and lights the way for our future.

Our history and heritage is of profound importance, not just for us but for all subsequent generations. Ignoring this is akin to disregarding our own identity. Hence, we call upon the necessary authorities to officially designate and acknowledge the Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts as a historical landmark. Let us celebrate our resilience, honor our past, and inspire future generations. Please sign this petition to make a difference.
