As you all know by now, many teachers at Derby College have been stuck at the bottom of the incremental scale for all the time they have been there (many for over 5 years) and their pay has not progressed as we would have liked it too. This morning I have been reading up on the terms and conditions of Teachers' pay. If you wish to read it all I will leave the link at the end of this news update but, if not (which is perfectly understandable) let me talk about the key bits I found. The first thing I found is that the school/college "determines pay progression" and this is why this petition can really make a difference. The decision makers of this petition are those on the top positions such as the CEO of Derby College: Mandie Stravino who is also Member of the Standards Committee, Strategy Committee and Search and Governance Committee and governors such as Janet Morgan who is the Chair of Corporation, Chair of Strategy Committee, Member of the Search and Governance Committee, Standards Committee and Remuneration Committee- certainly hefty and impressive titles.
Such committed people to the college will surely take action, no? So, please keep sharing this petition as it will form the building blocks for greater change at Derby College.
Another thing I found was that, "pay decisions must be clearly attributable to the performance of the teacher" and this is where the issue of Fair Pay is highlighted. I am certain and, so are many who have signed this petition, that Derby College has some of the most ridiculously hard-working teachers who are simply brilliant at their jobs and this should be recognised (if proof of this is needed I will happily write a 5000+ word report on each teacher i've had in Derby College). If it were up to me, after reading that term, all teachers at Derby College would be millionaires. However, that not's what I ask.
All we ask for is fair pay. That's all.
