Re-look JSS classification for retail goods and services sector.

The Issue

I feel that the JSS support on the budgets has left out a key industry who needed the most support. Retail trade adds up to 26,599 businesses in Singapore. The GDP contribution of Singaporean wholesale and retail industry amounted to approximately 82 billion Singapore dollars.

Retail shapes the character of Singapore - it underpins the growth of the tourism industry and contributes highly to the quality of life for Singaporeans to live work and play.

Retail goods and services sector faces a direct impact from COVID-19. However all of us are classified only as TIER 3 in terms of JSS support.

Food establishments and hawkers are classified as TIER 2 in terms of JSS support. Food establishments are still able to operate takeaway services and generate income.

However for retail goods and services sector we were forced to shutdown making 0 sales. There is not even hope in making revenue during circuit breaker periods. I am happy that such funding has been provided to the food sector, however the retail sector needs more help as traffic wont be coming back anytime soon.

Retailers should receive better JSS support compared to F&B. In fact retailers rely more on tourist as compared to F&B where the latter accommodates to more local spending. With the closure of T4 we can foresee that tourist will not be coming back to Singapore for a pro-long period of time.

I hope that this petition will shine some light on this matter and for policies to be re-looked at by the ministry of finance and deputy prime minister himself.
