Depop: Let Us Filter Out Fast Fashion & Raise Awareness By Introducing Ethical Filters ♻
The issue
I opened Depop to shop secondhand and avoid fast fashion — and now my feed is flooded with Shein. 💀
Depop was built as a home for unique, secondhand, and vintage fashion. It's supposed to be an alternative to fast fashion, not a new outlet for it. But right now, feeds and search results are packed with mass-produced, bulk-bought items from Shein, Boohoo, Fashion Nova and similar brands, resold at a markup — crowding out genuine vintage and secondhand sellers and making it harder and harder to shop the way this app was meant for.
I'm not the only one. So many of us come to Depop specifically to shop more ethically and sustainably, and right now, we have no way to do that. There's no filter to hide fast fashion. No way to prioritize real secondhand and vintage listings. No clear labeling telling us what we're even looking at.
We're asking Depop to build:
🚫 A "hide fast fashion" filter — let us exclude specific brands from our search and feed
♻️ A "secondhand/vintage priority" toggle — surface genuinely pre-loved items first
🏷️ Clear labeling — secondhand, vintage, handmade, or new/reseller stock.
⚙️ Sustainability preferences in account settings — set it once, apply it everywhere.
Some might say a filter like this could reduce visibility for fast fashion resale — and honestly, we're okay with that. Depop's whole reason for existing is to make secondhand and sustainable fashion easier to find and buy. If giving shoppers the choice to filter out mass-produced fast fashion means more attention goes to genuine vintage sellers and slower fashion instead, that's not a side effect — that's the platform working as intended. We're not asking Depop to police what people sell. We're asking it to make it easier for the platform to do what it was built for — this isn't a big ask.
