Make Teaching Colonial History Compulsory On The National Curriculum

Make Teaching Colonial History Compulsory On The National Curriculum
The Issue
I only remember being taught about the slave trade for one topic in year 9. The focus was mostly on America and the implications of colonialism on the rest of the world was not taught adequately. Britain should not hide from its history and we can not pick and choose what aspects we teach to our children. I am a teacher and I can see that children today are just as uneducated about British History as they were 20 years ago.
The government control the narrative which encourages the idea that BAME people have come here to use British resources and that they do not ‘belong here’. The focus in recent years on issues such as immigration have shown how much racism still exists in the UK.
We can not ignore the fact that BAME people were brought here - not always by choice, after the British invaded their countries. Including Colonial history to the curriculum will allow important conversations to take place, and for meaningful celebration of the contributions BAME communities have made to the world. Education is such a key factor in creating a change in society and it is more relevant than ever before.
