Stop stigma of students with special needs as "Troubled Students"

Stop stigma of students with special needs as "Troubled Students"
The Issue
As a mother of a child with special needs who has been subject to constant bullying, it has become clear to me that students with special needs are not advocated for. Nor are they getting the support they need in the school system where there is supposed to be ZERO TOLERANCE for bullying. Instead, these students are made to feel isolated, unworthy, and afraid. This issue goes beyond bullying too. A number of students like my son are being left behind by the same system that is supposed to provide adequate supports and a healthy learning environment for ALL. Our students may have struggles, however, that should not be a means to limit their ability. A number of students who have special needs can still be a contributing part of society. It is time that our schools started looking at our students as individuals with unique needs and different learning styles, not lost causes or anyone less than his or her peers. This needs to change.
